While we are made in God’s image, and thus due great dignity, in another sense disciples ought to see themselves, according to Jesus in Luke 17.10, as ‘unworthy servants’. In this challenging parable (Luke 17.7-10) Jesus addresses one of they key struggles that disciples face as we go on in our Christian life: it can be so easy to try to put God in our debt. In other words, our struggles with the spirit of entitlement. Jesus helps us find freedom from this enslaving attitude by a new understanding of our identity, liberating us to serve God and others in joy.
