The Apostles’ Creed: Living the Faith of the Church.
Jesus, God’s Only Son.
This Sunday we continue our series on the Apostles’ Creed. We consider the identity of Jesus- God’s Only Son.
In John 5.16-30 Jesus’ Jewish audience feel that he is claiming equality with God. Here is his chance, if he were less than fully God, to set them straight. But instead of correcting them for a misunderstanding, he challenges them to accept just how perfectly equal with God the Father he really is. He does work only the Father can, shares divine power along with the Father, and shares his Father’s authority to judge. These are the powers and prerogatives of God’s one-of-a-kind Son.
And what if such a worthy, precious Son were then offered for our redemption?
We celebrate the sacrifice of our own families, when sons and daughters are sent to purchase our freedom by their blood, in times of war. How much more ought we celebrate the gift of the most precious of all sons.
