This Sunday we continue our preparations for Christ’s coming. We consider the characters of Zechariah and Elizabeth (Luke 1.5-20). This elderly couple was faithful to the traditions and law of Israel, and devoted to God. They represent Israel’s true believers. However, their life had been a long and painful journey. Being unable to conceive they personally bore the stigma of their conservative religious community. They also carried the national shame of living under Roman occupation– longing for the redemption of God’s people and the fulfilment of his promises. Yet they did not give up hope. To these true believers the angel Gabriel comes with good news that will satisfy both their personal and national hopes. The same good news has the power to satisfy longsuffering, true believers, today.
