In Luke 2:21-40 we’re introduced to Simeon. Luke tells us he was righteous and devout, and was waiting for the consolation of Israel: waiting for the destiny promised long ago: a strong and wise king who would lead his people to a new era of peace and justice and prosperity.
Simeon declares that he can now die, he can rest content, because he can see the fulfillment of God’s promise. So many years in the making, but it’s finally arrived: the saviour of the world.
And Simeon, being a prophet, full of the Holy Spirit of God, has a message for Mary (v34, 35). There are 2 parts to this message:
People will come into conflict with each other because of the arrival of this child. And there will be struggle within the hearts of people as they come to terms will all this child stands for and all he is and the work he will do.
Questions for reflection:
What would it take for you to say: “I can finally die content”?
How do you see the conflict Jesus brings played out in Australian society?
What are the main conflicts you find within yourself, because of your devotion to Jesus?
What will be different when Jesus comes again to fully complete his work in bringing peace on earth?
