As we continue our Advent series on the kings of Israel, we come to 2 Samuel 5: David’s great victory over the Philistines.
With David, Israel at last has a good king, a king full of integrity and wisdom and trust in God.
For the first time it looks like there might actually be a positive outcome to Israel’s misguided request for a king. They asked for a king with wrong motives: so they could be like the other nations. But God will give them a king unlike the other nations.
Because of David’s absolute reliance on God, God brings victory for David.
Like David, Jesus won the victory over his enemies. He went to his death as an innocent victim. He returned as the decisive victor over death. So we are free of our greatest enemies: sin, death and the devil.
