Advent 3– The Promise of God’s King

Today we remember the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary: “You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). The angel expands that this child will be great, will be son of the Most High, will rule on the throne of David, and his rule will be forever. Mary accepts this news as God’s will for her and she submits herself to God’s plan.

Questions for reflection:

What does it mean for you that Jesus is ‘God with us?’

Which of the attributes of Jesus Gabriel mentions (v31-33) speaks to you the most?

Mary’s pregnancy would have risked Jesus being viewed by his society as an illegitimate child. Are there times when it looks to you like God’s purpose for you will put you at a disadvantage?
