Jesus gets the most airtime in the Christian creeds because Jesus is God’s greatest and last revelation of himself. Jesus is so central to God’s revelation, and that makes Jesus Christ the most intensely discussed and debated part of our faith.
This Sunday we’re exploring the line in the Apostles’ Creed: I believe in Jesus Christ.
Jesus is Jewish.
Jesus was born in a particular time in a particular place: he was a 1st Century Jewish man: a Galilean. An ex-carpenter. His mother was from Levi’s line and his earthly father was from the line of Judah and a descendant of king David.
Jesus is the Christ. (Christ = anointed one)
He perfectly fulfilled the roles of Prophet, Priest and King.
These are the three roles in Israel’s national life that relied on God’s anointing. There are examples of these throughout Israel’s story, both good and bad, but they were all pointing ahead to the one who fulfilled them all.
So if we have faith in Jesus we will have the wisdom to go to him as our prophet, we’ll have the humility to go to him as our priest, and we’ll have the privilege to go to him as our king.
