The Holy Spirit: the gift of faith
In John 13 to 17, Jesus shares a last meal with his disciples before his execution, and he talks with them about the unity he has with the disciples, and especially the gift of the Spirit, whom Jesus will send to them.
Last week Glen reminded us that the Spirit is our advocate. Our counselor. One who comes alongside us, defends and upholds us as we seek to live a life of joyful obedience.
Today, in John 14:17-21, we’re going to look especially at the Spirit’s work of bringing faith and reassurance into our lives.
Some of us have had the wonderful experience of knowing that love of God as we’ve traveled through the joys and difficulties of life. How do we know what we’re feeling is real? It’s because of Jesus’ promise: God has given us his Spirit.
Jesus promised the spirit would fill that role: giving us faith, and being a reassuring, powerful presence with us.
Reflection questions:
1. How has doubt played a role in your walk with Jesus? Is doubt disturbing for you, or has it resulted in a stronger faith?
2. Read John 14. Underline or make a note of every promise Jesus makes to his disciples. What will be the effect of believing these promises?
3. Jesus says in John 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command”. In John’s gospel, Jesus’ commands take on a very distinct character. Look up some of Jesus’ commands in John- 1:43, 12:36, 14:1, 15:4, 15:9, 20:22.
How do these verses help us interpret John 14:15?
4. How does the presence of the Spirit help you continue your walk with Jesus?
