Last Sunday we thought about our relationship to Christ in the analogies of being raised to live with him and becoming his slave. This Sunday we will look at a different image: being married to Jesus.
The wonderful news of Romans 7:1-6 is that we have been joined to Jesus in a new covenant, one that is unbreakable. This new attachment changes our attitude to a life of discipleship.
Under the law, the people of God served because they had to. They knew the law and they followed it (well, sometimes).
But now we live under grace, united to the living Christ. We have new hearts. So we serve because we want to.
We have seen the way Jesus our spouse has served us, laid down his life for us, and so we respond with willing and grateful hearts.
Our motivation to lead a life of righteous live has changed forever: we’ve moved from asking: What do I have to do? To: What do I get to do?
May Jesus continue to renew our hearts so they become more and more like his own.
God bless,
René
