Ruth Chapter 4, the Coming of the Redeemer

As the book of Ruth closes, Ruth and Boaz have a child together: a boy named Obed, who became King David’s grandfather. Fast-forward to the New Testament, Matthew 1 shows us Jesus’ family tree: the entire line of Abraham, through David, all the way down to Jesus’ birth in that same town where Obed was born, the town of Bethlehem. And we realise that all this time God was directing the lives of Naomi and Ruth and Boaz, even directing history, so that he could give us a redeemer in the Lord Jesus.

There are so many situations that could make us think that God isn’t there or that he doesn’t care. But we’ve seen in the book of Ruth that he works in and through the darkest times.

If we have any doubt whether God is completely devoted to us, let’s put it aside with this assurance: that he loves us and has given us a redeemer in Jesus.
