Encounters with Jesus: ‘Jesus and the man born blind: To see or not to see’ (John 9)

John 9 tells us about the time Jesus healed a man born blind and some of the drama that results from that act of healing.

On the surface it might just look like a story of a miracle and Jesus’ ongoing conflict with religious authorities. But there’s more going on here: this is a story about faith– of being blind to reality vs. seeing reality clearly.

This story shows us what spiritual blindness really is: It’s being ignorant of Jesus. It’s being ignorant of ourselves.

Sermon Reflection Questions

How do we keep things about ourselves hidden? Why is it important to confess our sins and failings?

In John 9: 2, the disciples ask Jesus who sinned, that the man was born blind. How does Jesus explain it to them?

Jesus told the Pharisees where he’s from (John 8:16-18), but they don’t believe it or understand it. (John 9:29). What does this tell us about the Pharisees?

In John 9:4-5, Jesus says he is the light of the world. What does this mean?
