Encounters with Jesus: ‘Neither Do I Condemn You’ (John 7.53-8.11)
This week we consider one of the most beautiful episodes in our entire New Testament: the story of the woman caught in adultery, in John 8.1-11. In this account are revealed the true righteousness and abundant mercy of Jesus, when the religious leaders lacked both. In the Person of Jesus, and above all in his cross, righteousness and mercy meet, and new forgiveness power is released into the world.
Sermon Reflection Questions
1. How do the religious leaders in this account seek to trap Jesus? What are the two impossible options they try to put Jesus between?
2. How does Jesus uphold both mercy and true righteousness in this account?
3. How are the actions of the religious leaders in this account, inconsistent?
4. How can we find the power to to separate wrong-doer, from wrong-doing, in order to become a forgiving people?
