Freedom from Controlling Fear – Psalm 34

At the best of times, we can find our hearts overwhelmed by fear. Even more so at the worst of times. Like us, David was beset by many troubles and fears (Psalm 34.4, 6). In the setting of this Psalm, he was fleeing both King Saul, and  the Philistines- both enemies who desired to take his life. And we today, have fears for the lives of some, as we journey through the COVID-19 Pandemic. Yet David found freedom from controlling fear. If he found freedom from controlling fear, how much more can we. We who know an even greater story of deliverance, that of David’s greatest son, Jesus, the Christ.

Sermon Reflection Questions – Psalm 34

1. Read 1 Samuel 21 and the biographical note at the start of Psalm 34. What two dangers was David wanting to escape?

2. Read Psalm 34.4-6. What did David come to believe God had done for him, as he escaped both Saul and King Achish?

3. Read Psalm 34 and verses 7-14. What is the heart condition that must be in place, so that we can expect the Lord’s deliverance?

4. What does it mean to fear God, in the way that is commended in this Psalm?

5. In what ways does the story of David’s greater Son, Jesus, give us even more power to resist the fears that beset our hearts today, in the COVID-19 Pandemic?
