Sunday, December 15

This coming Sunday’s reading is 1 Kings 2: David passes away. David has been good for Israel. He’s given them peace and prosperity. He’s given them real leadership: as a brave commander and as a humble man who worships God.

God made a covenant with David: his dynasty is assured. The kingdom will endure. But as history plays out, the kings of Israel were a disappointment in the end- for 2 reasons:

Either they were bad kings and brought disaster on the nation.

Or they were good kings and they died. They couldn’t keep going- because like all of us, they were mortal.

Jesus was the only king who overcame both these problems: he is the good king who lives forever. So our eternal future in his kingdom is assured.
