A home. Freedom from tyranny. Life. These desires are rooted deeply in the human heart. The great tragedy of our human experience is that of frustrated desire. We want an eternal home, we want freedom and flourishing life, but so often these gifts are stolen from us.
Today we consider God’s covenant with David (2 Samuel 7.1-17) and its fruit. In David’s day, the people of God, Israel, longed for the same gifts we do. Like us, their desires were sometimes frustrated. But God promised that through David their desires would be met, ‘I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed’. (2 Samuel 7.10)
In David’s day, and then in Solomon’s, this promise would find a fulfilment. But it finds a better fulfilment in the day of his greatest Son, Jesus. Rev Glen.
